About the Item

This rare and most unusual cast iron plaque with the portrait in profile of Hercules dates from the first or second decade of the 19th century. It is a typical example of the work of Prussian Iron Arts Foundaries in Berlin and Gleiwitz, the latter today part of Poland. The taste of the multicultural Berlin educated middle- and upperclass in the early decades of the nineteenth century has been deeply influenced by classical Greek history, mythology and Ikonography. A beautiful, expressive and solid ring has been custom made in 18 karat yellow gold to accomodate this ancient hero who's name has been synonymous for power, strength, courage, adventure and the art of survival since antiquity.
