Unique Freeform Ring in 18k Gold & Blue Opal by Kelvin J. Birk. One Of a Kind. Dimensions: W 1.0 x D 0.7 x H 2.3 cm. Materials: 18ct yellow gold and blue opal. This freeform ring is crafted from 8.4g of 18ct gold and features a 1.63ct blue opal (measuring 7mm x 9mm) in a bespoke setting on top. The ring shank measures 7mm at its widest point. It is currently available in size M (UK) / 53 (European) / 6 1/2 (US). Kelvin Birk. Gold- and Silversmith. The concept of value has always played a big role in Kelvin Birk’s work. What is valuable? What makes materials precious and valuable? He has been exploring the different perceptions of precious and common materials from an early stage in his career. One is not always aware of all the intrinsic qualities of precious materials, their beauty and how these qualities can be used. Birk tries to explore these qualities further through new approaches where he consciously disregard what is traditionally considered valuable as well as the way he is handling these materials. He also disregards the traditional techniques and lets the material do ‘their own thing’. There is no ‘this is the right way to do it’ all ways are the ‘right’ way to create. In his processes he allows the nature of the materials to dictate the final outcome. The mixture of stones, silver and the adhesive dictate the final form of the work and he allows chaos to take over and revels in a lack of control. The liquid metal flows where it wants to flow to, often leaving uneven edges and small holes. The ultimate question is: does the value of the item decrease? Is the broken gemstone still a gemstone? Has Birk enhanced the value by working on it?
