An Important silver table garniture comprising a pair of large eight-light candelabra and a centerpiece, by Heinrich Friedeberg, Berlin, circa 1850-1860 Description An Important silver table garniture comprising a pair of large eight-light candelabra and a centerpiece, by Heinrich Friedeberg, Berlin, circa 1850-1860 silver Haut. (chandeliers) 70 cm, 27 1/2 in., haut. (centre de table) 55 cm, 21 2/3 in.; 24 000 g, 771 oz 12 dwt in Rococo style decorated with vine and grapes, each piece resting on four legs in a shape of foliated volutes, the trunk shaped as a gnarled vine holding eight branches, each base applied with the arms of the Princes of Salm-Salm and the Beissel von Gymnich family, stamped FRIEDEBERG Condition The centerpiece with an associated glass liner. Other wise in overall very good condition. Very impressive size and weight. Very nice quality, appointed Court jeweller to the TSAR of Russia ! This sumptuous table garniture is engraved with the arms of Alfred de Salm-Salm (1814-1886), Prince of Salm-Salm, Duke of Hoogstraten, Prince of Ahaus and Bochlot, and hereditary member of the Prussian Lords' Chamber, titles which he inherited at his father's death in 1846. In 1836, he married Princess Augustine of Croÿ-Dülmen and had eleven children. As there is no recorded marriage between the Salm-Salm family and the Beissel von Gymnich family, this garniture might have been commissioned to commemorate an event in which these two influential Prussian families would have played an important role. Heinrich Friedeberg (1819-1885) was born in St Petersburg, and was the son of jeweler Samuel Friedeberg. He went to Berlin for his apprenticeship, became court jeweller to the Prussian Court in 1848 and founded the S. Friedeberg Söhne Company with his brother Wilhelm in 1850. In 1867, he was appointed Court jeweller to the TSAR of Russia. See a set of four table stands by Friedeberg but smaller than the present table garniture was sold Sotheby's London on 23 January 2014, lot 112 (height 28 cm; 6 642 g) ; and a decoration of the Order of the Red Eagle, which was sold Sotheby's Amsterdam on 27 March 2007, lot 1463.
