About the Item

A fine antique silver plated food warmer or tureen. By Christofle et Cie. Consisting of a two-part oval meat or fish warmer with scroll feet and acanthus leaf handles with a conforming dome or cover. The cover has a flower or fruit finial. Monogrammed to base and cover with with an engraved "JS" surrounded by a cartouche and leafwork. Simply a wonderful tureen from Christofle! Date: Mid to Late 19th Century Overall Condition: It is in overall fair, as-pictured, used estate condition. Condition Details: The lid rests with a slight gap or smile on the long sides. There is light edge wear throughout, some fine and light indentations and dings here & there (particularly a few noted to the dome), some typical surface scratches throughout. There are some spots of overpolishing to high points and the engraved decoration, and some spots of persistent tarnish here & there. Otherwise, there are some fine & light surface scratches throughout and some other signs of expected light wear consistent with age. Maker: Christofle Marks: Each piece is individually marked. The dome is marked around its rim with 550022 / 54 / Christofle balance stamp / Christofle. The insert is marked with 559544 / Christofle balance stamp / Christofle. A very fine & impressively large silver plated soup tureen by Elkington & Company of London with a capacity to hold 4 quarts. The substantial oval body having open handles, richly decorated with embossed & engraved foliate motifs & centered by blank foliate cartouches, the conforming lid bearing engraved heraldic crests. Raised overall upon a stepped oval foot, with the underside bearing impressed factory marks for Elkington & Co., together with date letter for 1884. In extremely good overall condition, and priced competitively in comparison to similar examples in the marketplace.
