About the Item

A superb example of a Barbizon inspired landscape painted by George Boyle, "the Catford Corot" from the late 19th Century. This very striking image shows the artist at the absolute peak of his ability and paying homage to his great inspiration, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot, with superb brushwork and palette knife flourishes providing a wonderful texture to the paint surface. George Boyle (1842-1930) A farmstead with a figure and her livestock in a pasture Signed lower left Oil on panel 10 x 14 inches without the frame 15 x 19 inches with the frame George Boyle is perhaps the best known English painter inspired by the Barbizon School. In fact he is known as the "Catford Corot" as his paintings have such a close resemblance to the school's main exponent, Jean Baptiste Camille Corot. The "Catford" element of this nickname corresponds to the area near Greenwich, London where he lived for most of his life. He exhibited extensively throughout his life at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. Examples of his work can be found in private and public collections internationally, including the collections of the Princeton University Art Museum, the Sheffield Museum, the William Morris Gallery and the National Gallery of Ireland.
