George Dinsdale (British, fl. 1809-1829) View of Bramham Park from the east, c. 1829 Oil on canvas 48.4 x 67.1 cm.; (within frame) 62.6 x 81 cm. (Unsigned) Provenance: Private collection, United Kingdom; Haveron Fine Art. Painted from the wooded east elevation overlooking Bramham Park, West Yorkshire, the landscape was made in the year following a disastrous fire which left the house in disarray (without even a roof), until repairs were made between 1906-14. Enclosed between the wooded foreground and passing grey cloud, a sweeping wind brilliantly lights the house beneath a central break in the cover. A general motion of the trees and clouds across the canvas is set off against the resoluteness of the house itself. The soft handling of the architecture produces a convincing depth of field, contrasted pleasingly with the foliate detail of the foreground. A human interjection comes with the woodcutter in the lower left of the composition, and a figure walking along a path towards the house. A closer view of a similar projection was published in Views of the Seats of Noblemen and Gentlemen (also 1829). ​ Still in family ownership, Bramham Park was completed in the Baroque style for Robert Benson, 1st Baron Bingley, between 1698-1710. A great fire began on the night of 2 August 1828, while the adult family were away; their young daughters had been left with the servants, who raised the alarm in the early hours. Three-quarters of the house was gutted, and a temporary roof was erected to preserve the interior stonework. Its owner, then George Lane-Fox MP, purchased the neighbouring Bowcliffe Park to subsequently house the family. His grandson, also George, employed the society architect Detmar Blow in 1908 to oversee Bramham’s restoration. The house has hosted the Bramham Horse Trials since 1974, and more recently the annual Leeds Festival. Little is known of Dinsdale’s biography, although he exhibited eight times at the Royal Academy between 1808-29, primarily with northern English and Scottish landscapes. His body of works appears to consist largely of watercolours, and a work in oil of this scale is particularly unusual. The Royal Academy of 1808 gives Dinsdale’s address as 10 Upper Titchfield Street, Fitzroy Square (Royal Academy, p. 45), although his interest in northerly landscapes is indicative of ties to the north of England.
