Maurice Valadon ( Utrillo ) 1883 -1955, was a French painter who was born in the Parisienne quarter of Montmartre and is one of the very few French impressionist painters to have been born there. His mother was Suzanne Valadon and she was also a very well known French painter who was a model for Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, Degas and many others, she bore her son Maurice but the father was never acknowledged and consequently a friend Miquel Utrillo adopted the boy and gave him his name stating that he would be glad to put his name to the work of either Renoir or Degas, however it is well known Utrillo was not the true paternal party. Maurice was effectively taught by his mother to paint and she was self taught, having sat for some of the greatest impressionist painters of the time, where the son and mother differed was on the subject , he predominantly painted suburban and city scenes from plein air and sometimes from memory also painting pictures from the view from his window. His style and manner was maintained throughout his career, however he suffered from regular mental disturbance and eventually in the mid 1930's he moved with his wife to Le Vesinet which is just outside Paris where he effectively retired. There is an abundance of biographical detail to be found on the internet and it would do a great injustice here to the artist to attempt his biography. This painting contains various mannerisms and hidden information which we are given to understand confirms this painting to be by Utrillo himself, however without a clear and decisive signature we have listed it as ' attributed ', which we are certain to prove to be Utrillo himself, the work is monogrammed 'V' which is further the identification of this work, we believe the 'V' stands for Valadon, he signed his works Maurice Utrillo V, image enclosed. I have enclosed a scholarly biographical explanation of the identity of the 'V' in his signature. Maurice Utrillo (1883–1955) stands as one of the most singular figures of the School of Paris, uniquely distinguished as one of the few prominent painters of Montmartre to have been born within its bohemian borders. Formative Years and the "Cursed Trinity" Born Maurice Valadon, he was the illegitimate son of Suzanne Valadon, a former circus acrobat and renowned artist's model who became a celebrated painter in her own right. Utrillo’s early life was marred by severe alcoholism and mental health struggles, which began in his early teens. In 1891, the Spanish artist and writer Miguel Utrillo legally recognized Maurice as his son, granting him the surname he would use for the rest of his life. Despite this legal name change, Utrillo remained profoundly attached to his mother. Together with Valadon’s second husband, André Utter, they became known in Parisian circles as the "trinité maudite" (the cursed trinity) due to their volatile, alcohol-fuelled, yet creatively prolific lifestyle. Encouraged by his mother to paint as a form of therapy for his addiction, Utrillo was largely self-taught, though he inherited Valadon’s keen eye for composition. He is most celebrated for his "White Period" (c. 1909–1914), where he captured the crumbling facades of Montmartre using a unique mixture of oil paint, plaster, and glue to replicate the texture of aging stone. His cityscapes often convey a profound sense of solitude and "poetic melancholy," frequently featuring empty streets or small, solitary figures. The Signature "V" A defining characteristic of Utrillo’s scholarly and biographical profile is his distinctive signature: "Maurice Utrillo V.". Symbol of Devotion: The "V" stands for Valadon, a deliberate inclusion intended to honour his mother and acknowledge her as his primary artistic mentor and life force. Identification of Heritage: Utrillo reportedly never cared for his legal surname. By appending the "V," he symbolically reclaimed his maternal identity and maintained his connection to the Valadon name under which he was born. Authentication Factor: This signature is a critical element for experts, as it appears on the majority of his canvases, though some early works are signed "Maurice Valadon". Later in life, Utrillo achieved international acclaim and was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1928. He eventually found stability through marriage to Lucie Valore in 1935, though he spent his final decades in relative seclusion, often painting from postcards of the Montmartre he could no longer visit.
