About the Item

Large 17th-century Italian painting. This oil-on-canvas painting depicts a rich composition of fruit arranged on stone steps against a sweeping landscape. The artist constructs the scene through a skillful interplay of solids and voids, allowing the viewer's gaze to wander from the dense cluster of fruit in the foreground to the distant blue volcano in the background. The dominant element is the two large bunches of grapes that cascade with natural elegance toward the center of the composition. Scattered around them are peaches with velvety skin, silvery plums, and a large pumpkin, arranged as if by chance. The large vine leaves, tinged with reddish and golden hues, bring a seasonal touch that hints at the arrival of autumn. The rendering of light is particularly refined, caressing the grapes, making them appear almost translucent, and giving the fruit a tangible presence. The painting is characterized by a warm and inviting color palette, playing on the contrasts between the amber hues of the peaches, the deep greens of the foliage, and the vibrant purples of the ripe grapes. Of particular interest is the landscape unfolding on the left, the silent protagonist of the work. Between the treetops, we catch a glimpse of a distant mountain range, shrouded in a thin atmospheric haze, which, thanks to the technique of aerial perspective, lends remarkable depth to the scene. In terms of its stylistic features and execution, the work appears to be linked to the Northern Italian tradition of the second half of the 17th century, a particularly fertile environment for still-life painting. A decorative 20th-century carved and gilded wooden frame, showing some signs of aging.
