The sitter is shown in three-quarter view with softly modelled facial features, curly hair and a draped garment, suggesting the influence of classical or Renaissance costume studies commonly used in academic drawing practice. The artist demonstrates confident control of graphite through delicate tonal shading and careful attention to facial structure. Subtle transitions of light and shadow across the face and neck create a naturalistic sense of volume, while the curls of the hair are articulated with precise linear strokes. Such portrait studies formed an essential part of nineteenth century artistic training. Students frequently copied from classical sculpture, engravings or live models in order to develop observational accuracy and mastery of tonal modelling. The numbering in the upper corner suggests that this sheet originally belonged to a structured series of drawing exercises. This work forms part of a small group of drawings attributed to Louisa J. Wortley dating to the mid nineteenth century.
