About the Item

Tom. X, Pl. LI, p. 334. From Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière. Paris, 1771. Etching and engraving on laid paper. Sheet size: 24.5 × 19.5 cm. A finely engraved anatomical plate comprising four numbered figures illustrating elements of comparative osteology. The principal figure (Fig. 1) presents the lateral view of a carnivorous mammal’s skull—likely canine—rendered with meticulous attention to dentition, cranial sutures, zygomatic arch, and mandible. Lettered annotations correspond to Buffon’s scientific text, identifying structural components with precision. Fig. 2 depicts a sequence of vertebrae in profile; Fig. 3 illustrates the pelvic girdle with sacral articulation; and Fig. 4 presents the articulated bones of the forepaw. The arrangement offers a systematic comparative study of skeletal architecture, reflecting Enlightenment interest in functional anatomy and morphological classification. The engraving demonstrates refined linear control and tonal modulation through disciplined hatching. Teeth, sutures, and articular surfaces are rendered with remarkable clarity, emphasizing both structural rigor and aesthetic restraint. The balanced composition within a ruled border reinforces the didactic character of the plate. Upper margin inscribed “Tom. X.” and “Pl. LI. Pag. 334.” Lower margin signed in the plate “De Seve del.” and “Defehrt sculp.” A clear plate mark visible. Printed on period laid paper. Condition: Very good, with light age toning and a faint vertical center fold from original binding. Minor scattered foxing, chiefly in the margins. Impression strong and crisp, preserving fine engraved detail.
