About the Item

Beaver and African & Asian Rhinoceros Skull Studies, Brodtmann, 1816 This unusual original hand-colored lithograph combines comparative anatomy and zoological illustration in a single composition. The upper portion of the sheet presents side-by-side studies of the skulls of an African rhinoceros and an Asian rhinoceros, while the lower section depicts a European Beaver (*Castor fiber*) in its natural habitat. The combination of skeletal studies and living animal representation reflects the scientific spirit of the early nineteenth century, when comparative anatomy became an increasingly important tool in understanding the natural world. The print was created by Swiss artist and natural history illustrator Karl Joseph Brodtmann (1787–1862) and published in Lindau in 1816 as part of the celebrated *Naturhistorische Bilder-Gallerie aus dem Thierreiche*. Produced during the pioneering years of lithographic printing, the series sought to educate and inspire through accurate depictions of animals, anatomy, and natural history subjects. At the top of the composition, Brodtmann illustrates the skulls of the African and Asian rhinoceros, highlighting the differences in horn structure, cranial shape, and dentition. Such comparative studies were highly valued by naturalists of the period and played an important role in the classification of species. The lower portion features the Beaver (*Castor fiber*), one of Europe's most remarkable mammals. Depicted resting on a rocky riverbank, the animal is shown with its characteristic broad, flattened tail. For centuries, beavers fascinated naturalists because of their engineering abilities, including dam building and habitat modification. During the nineteenth century, they were widely regarded as among the most industrious creatures in the animal kingdom. Brodtmann's skillful draftsmanship and delicate hand coloring create a harmonious composition despite the contrasting subjects. The print appeals equally to collectors of zoology, comparative anatomy, natural history, and scientific illustration. The combination of rhinoceros skull studies and a living beaver makes this one of the more unusual and intellectually engaging plates from the series. Today, original Brodtmann lithographs are prized for their historical significance, scientific accuracy, and decorative appeal. This sheet is particularly attractive to collectors interested in anatomy, mammals, museum specimens, and early zoological research.
