About the Item

This fantastical print by Malcolm Morley is named for Tankerton Bay, a seaside village in southeast England. Based on a 2006–2007 collaged painting, the work reveals Morley's expressionist interest, featuring brushstrokes and bold colors. Often drawing inspiration from technological and martial images, Malcolm Morley creates paintings that demonstrate deft technique, careful color choices, and gestural brushstrokes. Perhaps best known for his photorealism (although he prefers the term "super realism"), the artist captures and recreates tiny details from newspapers and personal photographs alike, even as he constructs more complex compositions. He has received numerous awards, including the inaugural Turner Prize, and has seen his works exhibited at numerous public and private institutions, including the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum, and the Museum of Modern Art. In June, 2015, Morley set an artist auction record with the sale of SS Amsterdam in Front of Rotterdam (1966) for $1.8 million at Christie's.
