Singer Needle Mezzotint Print, American Modern, Signed, Edition of 100

By Carol Wax

Located in New Orleans, LA

Carol Wax's "Singer Needle" is a mezzotint issued in an edition of 100. It was originally designed to illustrate the step by step mezzotint process in the Abrams publication: "The Mezzotint: History and Technique" authored by Carol Wax. It is FIROS #44 in the catalogue raisonne. Carol Wax originally trained to be a classical musician at the Manhattan School of Music but fell in love with printmaking. Soon after she began engraving mezzotints she was asked by the renowned print dealer Sylvan Cole to exhibit at Associated American Artists Gallery, launching her career as a professional artist/printmaker. With the publication of her book, The Mezzotint: History and Technique, published by Abrams, 1990 and 1996, Carol added author and teacher to her credits. In the ensuing years she has expanded her repertoire of mediums beyond printmaking into other works on paper and painting. In compositions reflecting an appreciation for antiquated machinery and vintage textiles, Wax creates imagery that, in her own words, “… speaks to an inner life perceived in inanimate objects.” She uses stylization and imagination to reinvent subjects, transforming an ordinary typewriter into a monumental icon...

By Beniamino Bufano

Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist: Beniamino Bufano (1889-1970) Title: Laura Year: 1970 Medium: Lithograph Image size: 18 x 12.25 inches Sight size: 19.5 x 13.5 inches. Framed size: 27 x 21 inches Signature: Signed, lower right Edition: 125. This one: 83/125 Condition: Very good Frame: Framed in black lacquer frame, black mat. Frame in good condition. This fine lithograph is by Beniamino Bufano (1889-1970), a well-known artist in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Museo Italo-Americano has this work in their permanent collection and indicates that it was pulled in 1970 at he Bank Street Atelier in New York in 1970. The print is in very good condition. The frame is in good condition with some light scratches. Beniamino Benvenuto Bufano was born in San-Fele, Italy on Oct. 14, 1889. At age three Bufano's family brought him to NYC where he spent his childhood and was educated by private tutors. He studied at the ASL in NYC from 1913-15, the pupil of James L. Fraser, Herbert Adams, and Paul Manship. He came to San Francisco in 1915 to work on a sculpture for the PPIE. For awhile he worked in the studio of coppersmith Dirk van Erp. He then traveled extensively for four years in France, Italy, India, and China. After returning to San Francisco in 1921, he remained there the rest of his life except for visits to the Orient and Europe. Always a radical, he lost his teaching position at San Francisco Institute of Art in 1923 because he was too modern for the conservative faculty. He later taught at UC Berkeley and the CCAC (1964-65). Henry Miller wrote of him, "He will outlive our civilization and probably be better known, better understood, both as a man and artist, five thousand years hence." His work, simple in style and monumental in scale, includes smoothly rounded animals in granite and icons sheathed in stainless steel. Only five feet tall, Bufano was a controversial, free spirit until his death in San Francisco on Aug. 16, 1970. Member: SFAA; NSS; American Artists Congress. Exh: Whitney Museum (NYC), 1917; Arden Gallery...

Ethel Magafan “Riding the Brahmas” Modernist Rodeo Lithograph Signed

By Ethel Magafan

Located in Denver, CO

Original mid-century modernist lithograph by celebrated American artist Ethel Magafan (1916–1993), titled Riding the Brahmas. This powerful signed and numbered print captures the explosive energy and drama of a rodeo scene, featuring a cowboy riding a bucking Brahma bull while another figure recoils from the animal’s forceful movement. Executed with bold expressive linework and dynamic composition, the lithograph exemplifies Magafan’s distinctive blend of American Modernism, Western regionalism, and WPA-era artistic influence. A leading figure in 20th-century American art, Ethel Magafan was renowned for her New Deal mural commissions and vivid portrayals of rural and Western American life. Alongside her twin sister Jenne Magafan, she studied at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center under influential artists including Boardman Robinson, Peppino Mangravite, and Frank Mechau. Her work earned national recognition for its sophisticated fusion of realism and abstraction, particularly in depictions of horses, rodeos, ranch life, and the American West. Riding the Brahmas is an exceptional example of Magafan’s mature printmaking style, combining rhythmic movement, emotional intensity, and strong graphic design. The composition evokes the grit, danger, and excitement of the rodeo while maintaining the refined aesthetic qualities associated with American Modernist printmaking. Its striking black-and-white tonal contrasts and energetic figural forms make it highly appealing for collectors of Western Americana, equestrian art, vintage rodeo...
