Impressionist Art

IMPRESSIONIST STYLE

Emerging in 19th-century France, Impressionist art embraced loose brushwork and plein-air painting to respond to the movement of daily life. Although the pioneers of the Impressionist movement — Claude Monet, Edgar Degas, Paul Cézanne, Berthe Morisot, Camille Pissarro, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir — are now household names, their work was a radical break with an art scene led and shaped by academic traditions for around two centuries. These academies had oversight of a curriculum that emphasized formal drawing, painting and sculpting techniques and historical themes.

The French Impressionists were influenced by a group of artists known as the Barbizon School, who painted what they witnessed in nature. The rejection of pieces by these artists and the later Impressionists from the salons culminated in a watershed 1874 exhibition in Paris that was staged outside of the juried systems. After a work of Monet’s was derided by a critic as an unfinished “impression,” the term was taken as a celebration of their shared interest in capturing fleeting moments as subject matter, whether the shifting weather on rural landscapes or the frenzy of an urban crowd. Rather than the exacting realism of the academic tradition, Impressionist paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings represented how an artist saw a world in motion.

Many Impressionist painters were inspired by the perspectives in imported Japanese prints alongside these shifts in European painting — Édouard Manet drew on ukiyo-e woodblock prints and depicted Japanese design in his Portrait of Émile Zola, for example. American artists such as Mary Cassatt and William Merritt Chase, who studied abroad, were impacted by the work of the French artists, and by the late 19th century American Impressionism had its own distinct aesthetics with painters responding to the rapid modernization of cities through quickly created works that were vivid with color and light.

Pillar Point Fishing Dock, Half Moon Bay - Mid Century Landscape

By William Winthrop Ward

Located in Soquel, CA

Beautifully detailed mid-century coastal landscape of Pillar Point Fishing Dock near Half Moon Bay, California by William Winthrop Ward (American, 1901-1985). Signed lower left: "W. Winthrop Ward." Displayed in a new gilt-toned frame. Linen size: 20"H x 24"W. Born in Walsall near London, England on June 12, 1901, William Winthrop Ward immigrated to Boston in 1916 and spent much of his youth boating off the coast of Massachusetts. After a stint with the U.S. Marines, he came to California in 1927. While a member of the Coast Guard, he began painting while tending the Point Lobos lighthouse on the coast at San Francisco. His work came to the attention of local artist Heliodor Hammarstrom, who tended the windmills in Golden Gate Park. Hammarstrom gave him encouragement and introduced Ward to George Demont Otis...

Dunes on California Coast, c 1930s

By Carl Sammons

Located in Pasadena, CA

Consigned to the gallery, Pasadena, California; By descent to a private collector, Encino, California; Acquired in 1998 by a private collector, San Carlos, Palo Alto, and Oceanside, California; From the Santa Barbara Historical Society Signed "Carl Sammons" on lower right Description This luminous coastal landscape by Carl Sammons is a striking example of the artist’s signature plein air style, depicting the rolling coastal dunes and lush vegetation of California’s shoreline. Best known for his depictions of Carmel and Monterey, the composition and palette of this work suggest inspiration from the Monterey Peninsula dunes. Sammons’ ability to merge vibrant, clean color with a sense of atmospheric perspective is evident here in the interplay of bright, sunlit sands and the rich greens of windswept foliage. His vibrant yet naturalistic color harmonies, crisp edges, and keen sensitivity to light bring the fleeting beauty of the coastal environment to life. The hazy eucalyptus grove in the background adds a distinctive regional touch, situating the composition firmly within California’s coastal identity. Sammons’ paintings of California’s unique landscapes played a significant role in documenting the natural beauty of the state during the early 20th century. Connection to the Monterey Art Colony By the 1920s and 1930s, Sammons became closely associated with the Monterey art colony, an influential hub for plein air painters such as Armin Hansen (1886–1957), William Ritschel (1864–1949), and Percy Gray...

Located in Soquel, CA

Ships at the Harbor - Nautical Seascape in Charcoal on Paper Detailed and layered harbor scene by Maude Folmar Ramsey (American, 1908-1993). The viewer is looking out at the harbor, across the water from the docks, buildings, and ships. The pillars, buildings, and masts are jumbled together in a pleasing manner that is almost abstract. Despite the simplified shapes, this piece is full of detail. This piece is executed in a rectilinear style frequently seen in American mid-century modern compositions. Signed in the lower right corner "Maude Folmar" Presented in a wood frame with a double mat. Frame size: 25.25"H x 29.25"W Image size: 17"H x 21.5"W Maude Love (Folmar) Ramsey (American, 1908-1993) studied at the School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Frame size 70x61 cm. José Muntané Balaguer (1889 - 1963) Immerse yourself in the spiritual beauty of "Woman Praying," a sublime work by the acclaimed Spanish artist José Muntané Balaguer. This oil on canvas captures the serenity and introspection of faith, showcasing a masterful use of light and shadow reminiscent of great masters such as Joaquín Sorolla, Ignacio Zuloaga, and even the emotional restraint of Diego Velázquez in his most intimate portraits. The painting depicts the purity of a devotional moment, where the female figure seems to transcend the canvas, inviting the viewer to reflect on spirituality and human connection. The meticulous attention to detail and subtlety in expressions place Muntané Balaguer in the tradition of artists who immortalized scenes of everyday life with unique sensitivity, much like Julio Romero de Torres...

Modernist Coastal Seascape Marsh Landscape Watercolour on Handmade Paper
Modernist Coastal Seascape Marsh Landscape Watercolour on Handmade Paper

Modernist Coastal Seascape Marsh Landscape Watercolour on Handmade Paper

Located in Cirencester, Gloucestershire

**Title:** Sierra Nevada Granada Spain Snowy Mountain Watercolour on Handmade Paper **Artist:** European School, 20th century **Medium:** Watercolour on handmade paper, unframed **Size:** 7.75 x 11.25 inches **Signature:** Unsigned **Stamped verso:** No stamp visible from the images provided **Provenance:** Private collection **Condition:** Fair to good vintage condition. The handmade paper shows age toning, surface marks, pinholes, handling wear, creasing and irregular deckled edges. There are visible nicks, tears, small losses and roughness to the outer edges and corners, consistent with age and the nature of the handmade sheet. The painted image remains atmospheric, decorative and visually appealing. **Description:** A striking 20th century European School watercolour landscape, painted on textured handmade paper and inscribed verso **Sierra Nevada Granada Spain**. The composition depicts a dramatic mountain view, with snow-covered peaks rising above layered rocky slopes and a blue lake or valley below. The scene has a bold, simplified quality, combining the atmosphere of a travel study with the decorative structure of a modernist landscape. The painting is particularly appealing for its graphic treatment of the mountain forms. The artist reduces the Sierra Nevada landscape into broad planes of muted blue, grey, brown, ochre, green and white, allowing the snow-capped ridges to stand out strongly against the darker surrounding slopes. The result is atmospheric yet design-led, with the landscape arranged almost as a series of abstract colour fields. The verso inscription identifies the subject as the Sierra Nevada near Granada in Spain, giving the piece strong topographical and search appeal. The Sierra Nevada mountain range is one of southern Spain’s most distinctive landscapes, known for its dramatic peaks, changing light and contrast between high mountain scenery and warmer Andalusian tones. This watercolour captures that sense of rugged terrain through a restrained but expressive palette. The handmade paper adds considerable character to the work. Its warm natural tone, visible fibres, pinholes and irregular deckled edges give the piece a tactile, artisanal quality, enhancing its sense as an original travel study or plein air-inspired work. The painted area sits within the sheet, leaving the surrounding handmade paper visible and giving the work a distinctive object-like presence. This original watercolour would appeal to collectors of Spanish landscapes, Sierra Nevada paintings...
