"Boulevard of Paris", 20th Century oil on canvas by Spanish artist E. Grau Sala

By Emilio Grau Sala

Located in Madrid, ES

EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 BOULEVARD OF PARIS signed “Grau Sala” (lower right) oil on canvas 25-1/2 x 32 inches (65 x 81 cm.) framed: 36-1/4 x 42-1/2 inches (92 x 108 cm.) Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. In this work Grau Sala has a loose, subtle brushstroke, in which the color shapes the entire work. The bright and transparent whites that give life to young schoolgirls contrast with the brushstrokes of blacks from the nun who accompanies them. The explosion of greens is refreshing, it surrounds us and transports us to an idyllic place, even if it is a citizen boulevard, which becomes friendly and beautiful. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...

Pluie a Venice (Venice in the Rain)
Pluie a Venice (Venice in the Rain)

Pluie a Venice (Venice in the Rain)

By André Hambourg

Located in Costa Mesa, CA

Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky. The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized. Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. It was such a large and important gift that the collection bears...

Signed lower left, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1959. A substantial, Post-Impressionist oil showing a panoramic view of a summer landscape looking an expansive field with scarlet poppies in the foreground and a view towards a range of lilac-tinted hills with a terracotta-tiled farmhouse in the distance. A robust and charming work that exemplifies the artist's characteristically lyrical brushwork, elegantly expressed here in a harmonious palette of turquoise, lavender, peach and other gentle pastel shades. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Free Exhibition at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they formed the foundation of the avante-garde group of Modernists, The Corner, that first introduced the principles of Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and most importantly to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a significant stylistic impact on his subsequent work. His palette grew brighter, and his earlier defined contours were subsumed into nuances of light. We are pleased to offer a dynamic painting from Rorup's mature period that exemplifies the qualities of his mature work, harmoniously capturing the warmth and color of a summer landscape.
