Michael Wolf wurde 1954 in München, Deutschland, geboren. Er lebte und arbeitete in Paris und Hongkong. Im Mittelpunkt von Michael Wolfs Arbeit steht das Leben in Megastädten. Seine Projekte dokumentieren sowohl die Architektur als auch die volkstümliche Kultur von Großstädten. Geboren in München, wuchs Wolf in Kanada, Europa und den Vereinigten Staaten auf und studierte an der UC Berkeley und der Folkwang-Schule bei Otto Steinert in Essen, Deutschland. Im Jahr 1994 zog er nach Hongkong, wo er acht Jahre lang als Vertragsfotograf für das Magazin Stern arbeitete. Seit 2003 konzentrierte sich Wolf auf seine Projekte und veröffentlichte über dreißig Bücher mit seinen Werken. Seine Werke befinden sich in zahlreichen ständigen Sammlungen, darunter das Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, das Brooklyn Museum, das San José Museum of Art in Kalifornien usw. Er starb 2019 in Hongkong.
