Torch Lake Retreat

For longtime clients, we transformed this distinctive Torch Lake residence into a light-filled retreat that will eventually become their primary home. Defined by its exaggerated gambrel roof, soaring ceilings and nautical, Scandinavian-inspired architecture, the original house had beautiful bones but felt dark and overwhelmed by heavy wood. Through a thoughtful renovation and addition, we painted many of the original ceilings, walls and architectural elements a warm off-white, creating a brighter, more cohesive backdrop that draws attention to the sweeping lake views.

The palette was inspired by the colors of Torch Lake, while the clients’ love of pattern and time spent living in England informed the home’s relaxed country sensibility. Family heirlooms and found objects were layered with new and custom furnishings, colorful textiles and durable materials suited to a home frequently filled with children, guests and dogs. The result feels collected over time rather than newly decorated.

Among the home’s most memorable spaces are a cozy television room wrapped in dark grasscloth and filled with art, books and personal artifacts; a dramatic dark green bar; and a mud hall featuring the family’s restored wicker sofa. Every room was designed to feel comfortable, approachable and deeply personal.
