About the Item

A large Japanese Satsuma earthenware baluster vase from the Meiji period (1868–1912). The vase is finely hand-painted with figural panels depicting samurai warriors, dignitaries, and scholars accompanied by children, all set within stylized landscapes featuring mountains and ornamental foliage. The scenes are framed by richly decorated borders, characteristic of the narrative and ornamental complexity favored in Meiji-period Satsuma wares. Satsuma pottery is renowned for its intricate overglaze enamels and delicate gilding applied over an ivory-toned crackled glaze. The present example further features raised, textured decorative elements known as 'moriage', adding depth and sculptural interest to the surface. This vase is unmarked.
