About the Item

A monumental Chinese celadon-glazed porcelain moon flask in the Qianlong style, China, end of the 20th century. The vase is modeled in the traditional bianhu (moon flask) form, with a cylindrical neck flanked by finely modeled elephant-head handles. The compressed globular body is exquisitely carved in low relief with two powerful, sinuous dragons amidst scrolling lotus blossoms, ruyi-form clouds, and stylized wave motifs. The dynamic interplay of coiling dragons and undulating vegetal scrollwork evokes the decorative vocabulary associated with Qianlong period imperial wares. The carving is crisply executed, allowing the translucent pale sea-green celadon glaze to gather in the deeper recesses and subtly thin across the raised surfaces. This pooling effect enhances the dimensionality of the relief and creates a nuanced range of tonal variation within the glaze, heightening the dramatic movement of the composition. The underside bears an underglaze blue six-character Qianlong seal mark, apocryphal, a common feature on later works created in homage to 18th-century prototypes. The refined craftsmanship, balanced proportions, and luminous celadon surface demonstrate the continued reverence in the 20th century for Qing dynasty ceramic traditions. A striking and architecturally scaled decorative object, uniting classical form, symbolic dragon imagery, and the enduring appeal of celadon glaze.
