About the Item

A rare and exquisite complete set of nine Japanese lacquer sweet trays (kashiki) executed in the supremely demanding togidashi maki-e technique — one of the most time-consuming and technically refined methods in the entire canon of Japanese lacquer art, and among the most prized by collectors worldwide. Togidashi maki-e — literally "polished-out maki-e" — is a technique of extraordinary patience and precision. Gold or silver powder is applied to a wet lacquer ground to create the design, then sealed beneath multiple additional layers of lacquer, each of which must be allowed to cure fully before the next is applied. The surface is then painstakingly polished back with charcoal and water until the decoration is revealed flush with the surrounding lacquer — producing an image of unparalleled smoothness, depth, and luminosity, with no raised edges or relief. The result is a surface that appears to glow from within rather than to sit upon the object, a quality that no reproduction or photograph can fully capture. A single tray of this quality may require months of work; a matched set of nine represents an investment of skilled labour and artistic commitment of a quite extraordinary order. The trays are of slender, elegant proportions — 18 cm in diameter and just 2 cm in depth — the shallow form perfectly suited to the presentation of Japanese confectionery (wagashi) in the refined context of the tea ceremony or formal entertainment. Their modest scale belies the intensity of craft contained within each surface. The fact that all nine survive together as a complete set — with their original storage box — is a rarity in itself, as such sets were subject to the attrition of a century and a half of use and the dispersal of collections over generations. As objects they inhabit the intersection of fine art and the most elevated tradition of Japanese decorative craft — equally distinguished displayed as a group, used for their original purpose, or incorporated into a collection of Japanese lacquerware.
