About the Item

For centuries, the suanpan, or Chinese abacus, served as one of the world's most sophisticated calculating devices. Long before the arrival of electronic calculators, merchants, scholars and accountants relied upon its remarkable efficiency to perform everything from simple arithmetic to complex commercial calculations. Its enduring presence within Chinese culture transformed the abacus into more than a practical tool; it became a symbol of intelligence, prosperity and disciplined thought. This elegant example dates to the mid-20th century and follows the traditional suanpan arrangement, with two upper beads and five lower beads to each column. While the form remained rooted in centuries of mathematical tradition, the choice of material elevates this piece beyond the ordinary. Both the frame and beads have been carved from a pale green hardstone, likely a form of jadeite, displaying natural variations in colour ranging from milky celadon to richer translucent green tones. The polished surfaces catch the light beautifully, while subtle differences in the shaping and finish of the beads speak to the hand-finishing involved in their production. The result is both tactile and visually compelling: an everyday object transformed into an object of refinement and display. Unlike utilitarian wooden examples intended solely for use, this abacus was clearly conceived as a presentation piece or treasured personal possession. It is housed within its original fitted case, covered externally in floral-patterned brocade and opening to reveal a cream faux-silk interior. A shaped foam support secures the abacus neatly in place, protecting the delicate hardstone construction while lending the ensemble the character of a jewellery or writing accessory case. The combination of traditional craftsmanship, luxurious materials and complete presentation makes this an appealing object for collectors of Chinese scholar's items and decorative arts alike. Whether appreciated as a symbol of commerce and intellect, a conversation piece for the desk, or simply for the beauty of its materials, it represents a fascinating meeting point between utility and artistry. Condition Presented in good vintage condition overall. Minor scuffs and handling marks are present, while several beads display light abrasions and slight irregularities in polish consistent with hand-finishing and use. The brocade case remains intact, with only modest wear to the edges and surfaces commensurate with age. We ship internationally, tracked and insured.
