About the Item

Fine and exceptionally large antique Chinese agate snuff bottle of compressed circular form, carved from richly banded translucent honey-brown agate with dramatic natural floating inclusions and contrasting pale chalcedonic formations. The broad principal face is dominated by a large pale inclusion surrounded by concentric bands of warm amber, cream and brown agate, while the reverse displays an entirely different natural composition of yellow, white and darker mineral formations. The considerable scale of the stone allows these naturally occurring patterns to read almost as abstract landscape imagery. The bottle is very well hollowed for its unusually large size and may be described by collectors as a "floater" agate bottle (so well hollowed that it floats in water), with a broad flattened body, short cylindrical neck and neatly finished foot. The banding continues around the narrow sides of the bottle, emphasizing the natural structure of the agate and the substantial size of the original stone. With associated rose quartz stopper, cork and spoon. Chinese, late Qing dynasty, late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1900.
