About the Item

Indian folk-art wood carvings have long served as both devotional objects and cultural expressions, reflecting regional styles and deep-rooted religious traditions. Many were created for temples, shrines, and domestic altars, where depictions of deities and mythological figures embodied protection, prosperity, and spiritual guidance. Regions such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Odisha became renowned for their dynamic and expressive woodcarving techniques, producing works that combined symbolic meaning with bold, intricate craftsmanship. This impressive 65 cm high sculpture depicts a standing female deity, likely Parvati, flanked by two smaller child figures, interpreted as her sons Ganesha and Kartikeya, key figures in the Hindu pantheon. The central figure is distinguished by an elongated, elegant body, an ornate headdress, and intricately carved jewellery, projecting both authority and maternal grace. The artisan has rendered the flowing garments and decorative ornamentation with careful attention to rhythm and proportion, creating a composition that balances solidity with a sense of movement. The dark hardwood has developed a rich natural patina over time, softened by handling and age, while traces of surface wear attest to its historic use in devotional contexts. The rustic yet detailed carving style reflects South Indian folk traditions, where religious imagery was often given bold form to convey narrative and spiritual presence. Condition The carving is structurally stable. Surface wear is present, particularly at the high points, along with minor losses to edges. The patina remains intact, enhancing the character and authenticity of this remarkable devotional sculpture. We ship internationally, tracked and insured.
