About the Item

An exquisite and highly refined work of American studio woodturning: an organic, slender-walled sculptural vessel crafted in native Osage Orange by the noted Pennsylvania wood sculptor William "Wm" Rubenstein (1940–2016). This is a small, intimate piece—often called a "pinch bowl," "desk dish," or "trinket bowl." Evoking the highly precise, lightweight forms of mid-century craft pioneers like Bob Stocksdale, this bowl showcases masterful lathe-work. Rubenstein turned the notoriously dense, rock-hard Osage Orange wood down to a remarkably clean, slender wall profile. This refined thickness gives the bowl a graceful, delicate quality that beautifully balances elegance with the natural, rugged strength of the timber. The undulating, wavy rim naturally warps with the grain, framing an intimate interior that displays the wood's intense, shimmering grain. Over decades, the piece has matured into a spectacular, warm honey-amber and golden-orange patina. Signed by the artist on the underside, this beautifully turned small-format masterpiece is an exceptional statement piece for a desk, vanity, or shelving display in any modern or high-end mid-century interior. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Despite its slender, thin-walled construction, the Osage Orange body is structurally perfect, robust, and entirely free from cracks, splits, or warping. The wood exhibits a highly attractive, matured golden-orange patina with a smooth, lustrous hand-rubbed finish. The artist's signature on the base remains clear and completely legible. About the Artist: William Rubenstein William "Wm" Rubenstein (1940–2016) was an accomplished studio woodturner, sculptor, and educator based out of Chalk Hill, Pennsylvania. An active member of the American Association of Woodturners, Rubenstein was highly respected for his technical mastery of the lathe, notably inventing specialized vacuum-chucking techniques to hold delicate, thin-walled turnings without marring their surfaces. His turned hollow forms, natural-edge vessels, and native hardwood bowls are highly collected today for their clean modernist proportions and meticulous finishes. Organic Modern
