About the Item

A handsome French Napoleon III walnut box, richly decorated with intricate mother-of-pearl, ivory and brass inlay. The rectangular form is beautifully proportioned and showcases the exceptional craftsmanship characteristic of the late 19th century, with delicate inlaid motifs set against the warm walnut ground. The lid is centered with an elegant brass cartouche that remains unengraved, offering a clean and sophisticated presentation. Opening to reveal its original blue-lined interior, the box retains much of its charm and functionality. It is believed the interior originally contained a fitted tray or shelf, also lined in blue fabric, which is no longer present. The interior compartment measures approximately 3 inches deep, providing generous storage for jewelry, letters or treasured keepsakes. The box is presented without its original key. Condition is good overall, consistent with age and use, with a few minor flakes and small losses to the veneer and inlay that do not detract from its decorative appeal. The box remains structurally sound and displays beautifully. A substantial and decorative example of Napoleon III craftsmanship, ideal for a collector of fine French decorative arts or as an elegant accent within a refined interior. France, circa 1870
