Swedish Art Deco Bakelite “Saturn” Candlestick, 1930s A striking and sculptural Art Deco candlestick crafted in Sweden during the 1930s, executed in richly colored bakelite and conceived in the unmistakable form of the planet Saturn. The design is composed of a deep oxblood red–brown spherical body, encircled by a bold black “ring” that evokes Saturn’s celestial silhouette. The composition rests upon a square base in matching dark red bakelite, creating a strong architectural foundation. At the top, a black candle cup rises from the globe, completing the geometric interplay of circle and square, sphere and line. This piece exemplifies the fascination with astronomy, modernity, and streamlined form that characterized the Art Deco period. The contrast between the glossy, almost lacquer-like surface and the graphic black detailing gives the object a dramatic presence. Both playful and disciplined, it captures the machine-age optimism and cosmic imagination of the 1930s. The warm, translucent depth of the red bakelite enhances its sculptural quality, while the sharply defined black ring provides a dynamic visual tension.
