ARTS AND CRAFTS STYLE

Emerging in reaction to industrialization and mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement celebrated handcrafted design as a part of daily life. The history of Arts and Crafts furniture has roots in 1860s England with an emphasis on natural motifs and simple flourishes like mosaics and carvings. This work is characterized by plain construction that showcases the hand of the artisan.

The earliest American Arts and Crafts furniture dates back to the start of the 20th century. Designers working in this style in the United States initially looked to ideas put forth by The Craftsman, a magazine published by Wisconsin native Gustav Stickley, a furniture maker and founder of the Craftsman style. Stickley’s furniture was practical and largely free of ornament. His Craftsman style drew on French Art Nouveau as well as the work he encountered on his travels in England. There, the leading designers of the Arts and Crafts movement included William Morris, who revived historical techniques such as embroidery and printed fabrics in his furnishings, and Charles Voysey, whose minimal approach was in contrast to the ornamentation favored in the Victorian era.

American Arts and Crafts work would come to involve a range of influences unified by an elevation of traditional craftsmanship. The furniture was often built from sturdy woods like oak and mahogany while featuring details such as inlaid metal, tooled leather and ceramic tiles. The style in the United States was led by Stickley, whose clean-lined chairs and benches showcased the grain of the wood, and furniture maker Charles Rohlfs, who was informed by international influences like East Asian and French Art Nouveau design.

Hubs in America included several utopian communities such as Rose Valley in Pennsylvania and the Byrdcliffe Arts and Crafts Colony in New York, where craftspeople made furniture that prioritized function over any decoration. Their work would influence designers and architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, who built some of the most elegant and iconic structures in the United States and likewise embraced a thoughtful use of materials in his furniture.

Adjustable wrought iron desk lamp with counterweight, Dutch expressionist ca. 1920. A rare architectural gem from the golden era of Dutch design. This adjustable wrought iron table or piano lamp, dating from the early 1920s, is an exceptional example of the Amsterdamse School movement, famed for its expressive forms, honest materials, and integration of function and sculpture. Crafted entirely by hand, the lamp features a sophisticated three-position height adjustment system via a striking counterweight mechanism, a feat of engineering as elegant as it is utilitarian. The heavy forged iron frame displays bold geometric detailing and honest craftsmanship typical of the movement, with meticulous hammer marks and subtle asymmetry that celebrate the hand of the maker. While unsigned, the design language speaks clearly to the school of Piet Kramer and the greater network of Amsterdamse School designers, whose influence extended into municipal buildings, interiors, and custom furnishings throughout the Netherlands in the 1910s and '20s. This is not just lighting, this is architecture in miniature. The not original hide-like-fabric of the lamp shade is no longer in perfect condition, but it certainly still is good enough to use on this desk lamp. With this rare lamp you can create the perfect atmosphere on your desk or on any (side)table in your living room, (home) office or library / reading room. If you like the uniqueness, the quality, the beauty, the workmanship, the condition and the deeper meaning of this sculptural table lamp as much as we do then you will love our price. Especially when taken into account that perfect packing and also worldwide delivery from our store to your door in just 4 to 5 days are complimentary. Maximum height adjustable x width x depth: 14,5 till 21 x 5.7 x 13.5 inches. *Styling Tips: Art Deco or Bauhaus furnishings as counterpoints. Or let it stand solo, like a sculptural presence on a console or credenza. We are driven by a passion for uniqueness, timeless, quality, stylish design, and the enduring craftsmanship of the past. The meaning of Auspiciousness Feng Shui Eggs Harmony, safety and a smooth path towards achieving goals are overall meaning of Auspicious Feng Shui Egg. The proportion of 52 to 54 mm in length signifies a wealthy life and the width of 42 to 44 mm signifies happiness and prosperity, while the coins placed inside each egg signify good fortune, good luck harmony and spiritual support. • Silver Auspicious Egg The colour of peace, justice, intelligence, future-facing, communication, maternity, happiness and prosperity. • Gold Auspicious Egg The colour of power, virtue, prestige, leadership, happiness and prosperity. • Copper Auspicious Egg The colour of elegance, happiness, charm, popularity, imagination and wealth. Bringing Auspiciousness Eggs into your home or place of work can bring harmony in love, along with good family relations and good fortune in your career, at the same time enabling wealth generation for you, your parents, children and the team who you work with. The significance of the numbering used in creating the Auspiciousness Eggs Number 1 signifies success, victory, smoothness in life, leadership and recognition. Number 6 signifies unexpected fortune, divine blessing, imagination and happiness. Number 8 signifies wealth, power, popularity and spiritual support.
