Robin Lehman Leaping Fish Dichroic Art Glass Paperweight, 2017

Robin Lehman Leaping Fish Dichroic Art Glass Paperweight, 2017

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Striking art glass sculpture or paperweight features rounded form in clear glass, fully covered with reliefs of leaping fish; the underside of the paperweight is accented with a layer of dichroic glass, adding a striking multi-color shift to the piece, going from blue to teal green, and then to magenta pink. The flowing, dynamic relief depicts its wildlife subjects in concise, refined style, influenced by Art Deco and Swedish Grace, as well as Danish Modern styles. The sculpture is elevated on 3 small clear resin feet, adding a gap between the object and the surface it's displayed on and enhancing the visual effects of the dichroic color shift. The paperweight is signed and dated by the artist on the underside. Robert O. “Robin” Lehman, an internationally renowned Rochester-based glass artist and documentary filmmaker, studied painting and graphic arts during his college years. When he graduated, he studied musical composition with Nadia Boulanger in Paris and then worked with her for 10 years. While in Europe, Lehman combined his skills in sound and vision and began making documentary films. For his work, he has won more than 150 awards at most of the major film festivals in Cannes, Berlin, Chicago, Melbourne, San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. His films have also won two Academy Awards and a third nomination as well as an Emmy. Robin was invited to the Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, where he filmed Venetian classical glass master, William Gudenrath...

Early Hiroshi Yamano Art Glass Sculpture or Paperweight, 1988
Early Hiroshi Yamano Art Glass Sculpture or Paperweight, 1988

Early Hiroshi Yamano Art Glass Sculpture or Paperweight, 1988

Located in Clifton Springs, NY

Early Art Glass sculpture by Hiroshi Yamano features a grouping of raising controlled air bubbles in the center of a clear glass disc object. The bubbles are partially enveloped by pale green, pink, and blue colored glass layers that are flowing around and through the central structure. The underside is polished flat, adding clarity to the sculpture and emphasizing the use of negative space in the composition. The sculpture is signed and dated by the artist in etching on the underside; it can be used as a paperweight, if desired. It is contemporary to Yamano's famous "From East to West" series, that he started in the late 1980s, while he was a graduate student at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The sculpture was created in 1988; it is evocative of flowing water and underwater views. While we don't think that the sculpture is a part of the series, it is an important early work and a reflection on his studies. Hiroshi Yamano (b. 1956) is recognized as one of Japan's foremost and innovative glass artists. He attended the California College of Arts and Crafts, the Tokyo Art Institute, and Penland School of Crafts (where he served as an assistant), before receiving his Masters in Fine Arts degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY, in 1989. Yamano began working with glass after seeing an exhibition of Scandinavian glass in Kyoto. At California College of Arts and Crafts he studied under Marvin Lipofsky, learning the creative aspects of glass. In 1986 he worked as an instructor at Leon Applebaum...

Antique, New and Vintage Paperweights

While any heavy object can be used to hold loose papers, there’s nothing as ornate yet perfectly functional as a paperweight. Antique, new and vintage paperweights can unobtrusively enhance the ambience of a room or act as a colorful conversation starter. On a desk or writing table, it can contribute a subtle sense of style.

Glass paperweights emerged in Europe in the mid-19th century. Early paperweight artisans like Venetian glassmaker Pietro Bigaglia often crafted them with a design on the inside. By the early 1900s, paperweight objects became even more popular through innovative iterations by artists like Louis Comfort Tiffany.

As the paperweight became both a luxury and utilitarian object, creators used a variety of materials to set their wares apart. Today, in addition to the classic glass versions, paperweights are made of metal, wood, ceramic and stone.

A vast selection of paperweights as well as a whole range of other desk accessories can be found on 1stDibs — browse by type, price, period, material or style, from Art Deco and Hollywood Regency to metal and glass. Reflecting their widespread appeal, paperweights are available in a diverse array from across the globe, including Italy, France and North America, as well as examples by leading designers and brands such as Fratelli Toso, William Guillon and René Lalique. Whether an office or a study needs a touch of something vintage or a mid-century modern twist, there are paperweights to suit every taste.
