About the Item

A glazed antique lion mask attributed to LEFCO dating back to the 1900s. This distinctive piece is modelled with high detail using various sculpting techniques, finished with a marble-effect glaze. It is thought to be originally created for architectural ornamentation, possibly on the front of a building. This mask is presented on a bespoke metal stand, ready to display. We have a pair available presented as interior displays, but would also be perfect to flank a grand entrance or individually as an overdoor decoration. Leeds Fire Clay Company (LEFCO) The Leeds Fire Clay Company (known as LEFCO) was established in 1889 following its amalgamation of 5 existing firms to become the largest clay working company in the country. Specialising in items such as terracotta, bricks and tile, Lefco was one of the major manufacturers of glazed architectural ceramic products of the late 19th and early 20th centuries before the company’s closure in 1957. In 1912, a range of Lefcoware was introduced especially for their garden ornaments.
