About the Item

A beautifully aged antique devotional sculpture carved in France circa 1680 during the Louis XIV period. Hand-carved from solid wood, the figure depicts a standing female saint in flowing robes, her right hand placed across her chest in a gesture of humility and reverence, while her left gathers the drapery at her side. The composition conveys a quiet, contemplative presence, characteristic of Baroque religious carving. The large sculpture retains traces of its original polychrome over gesso, with a warm palette of ochre, cream, and muted red tones, now softened through centuries of natural wear. The deeply carved, angular folds of the drapery reflect strong late 17th century craftsmanship associated with Louis XIV period work, while the softly modeled face, framed by parted hair, adds a gentle and human quality to the figure. A small carved ornament at the waist, along with a delicately painted necklace at the collar, serves as decorative detailing rather than specific iconographic attributes. The absence of identifying symbols suggests the figure was intended as a general devotional representation of a female saint, possibly evoking themes of piety or penitence rather than depicting a specific individual.
