Pair of Children, Polychromed Pine Wood, Spain, 18th Century and Later

Located in Madrid, ES

Couple of children. Polychrome pine wood, Century XVIII. Pair of polychrome pine wood carvings that represent two children in an attitude of playing a musical wind instrument, both seated, with their hands towards their faces, and slightly raising one leg to add some movement to a posture that, otherwise, it would be perhaps too static. Due to their postures and attitudes, they would be part of a large and quality altarpiece, judging by the size, the details, the hair, the proportions, etc., elements in which the musical angels were not something strange. Note that those present do not have wings, calling themselves in these cases "putti" and being, in the same way, figures of habitual presence in religious environments despite having emerged from Renaissance classicism and its sources from Antiquity. The proportions of the sizes, the anatomy, the symmetry, the certain plasticism of the hair, etc. are elements that speak of an influence of Neoclassicism in these sculptures. Likewise, a certain resemblance to works from the 18th century of the Castilian school can be appreciated." Size: 22 x 42 x 85 cms / c/peanas 37 x 37 x 180 cm. Weight is merely orientative. Bases and wooden instruments...

The 3 Faces Sculpture by Jean-Baptiste Van Den Heede Unique piece Dimensions: W 21 x D 12 x H 39 cm Materials: Stone. Jean-Baptiste Van den Heede defines himself as a cabinetmaker-designer and an artist of academic training and family tradition. He has achieved unique designs of national and international prestige and has several awards in avant-garde furniture. Born in Argentina in 1966, from an Argentine mother and a Belgian father. At 5 years of age he and his family moved to Belgium. To train as a wood professional, he first studied 4 years of carpentry. Then he continued training in cabinetmaking and carving for 5 more years. Always in search of contributing something more to his trade, he studied furniture and antique design, culminating this with the study of Sculpture at the Royal Academies of Fine Arts in Liège (Belgium) and graduating with honors. Work the stone, the wood and experience the forge. From the beginning it is directed towards a search for signs, abstract writings and unrealistic figures in analogy with other “primitive” cultures. He taught drawing and sculpture in Brussels at the private school “la main et l´ esprit” As well as summer courses in Liege (Belgium) “les ateliers d´art contemporain”. In 1995 he went to Barcelona where he taught and investigated the reliefs of different supports such as trees, floors, and especially sewer covers. He searched again analogies between current art and prehistoric, African art, etc. Participated in several exhibitions both at the artistic level and avant-garde design. In 2002, he moved down to Albacete and then to a town in the province where he still works. It is defined as “a search engine...

19th Century Antique Spanish Torero or Bullfighter Bronze Sculpture, Signed

19th Century Antique Spanish Torero or Bullfighter Bronze Sculpture, Signed

Located in Madrid, ES

A fine example of Spanish "costumbrista" style, where artists represented traditional characters such as bullfighters, flamenco dancers and bandits, creating a sometimes romanticized vision of the country's traditions. This 19th century bronze by sculptor Agapito Vallmitjana (1833-1905) shows us a serious and dignified bullfighter in full regalia. Vallmitjana was active in Barcelona, along with his brother Venancio, who was also a sculptor. They were both successful and well-known in their time, and their works are in public places and various collections in Spain, including a beautiful life-size marble Christ...
