About the Item

A rare pair of simulated marble painted urns, extraordinary scale and weight! These were likely a bespoke interior comission. France, circa 1890. Height - 89 cm ( 2 ft 11" ) Width at widest point - 45 cm Marbling is a specialist painting technique that imitates the colours, patterns and lustre of polished stones and metamorphosed limestones. It has been used for many centuries to enrich the appearance of interior, and occasionally exterior, architectural elements. It may have been used when the cost or weight of genuine stone would have been prohibitive. Decorators would take sample books of all paint treatments to clients houses for them to choose the finish they would like .
