About the Item

This antique Chinese pickling pot was originally used for fermenting rice or sorghum into vinegar. Dating to the mid-19th century, the small jar has a squat, rounded form and is beautifully glazed with neutral earth tones in the manner of Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) cizhou ware. Abstract botanicals and freeform linework is painted in brown iron pigments atop creme-white slip, now richly aged with pitted wear and an allover crackle. Minor losses to rim.
