About the Item

This richly glazed Chinese vase was shaped by hand in the mid-19th century, originally used to store wine and spirits made from rice and other grains. The wine jar is potted to a gently tapered form and beautifully glazed with neutral earth tones in the manner of Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) cizhou ware. Loosely brushed characters and botanical motifs decorate the shoulders and sides, painted in brown iron pigments atop a creme-white slip. The sparse design is banded with concentric lines and petal-like borders of freeform brushwork. Now aged with wrinkled crazing and marked with imperfections, the sculptural wine jar has only become more beautiful with time. Minor losses to rim. Additional Dimensions: Diameter of Opening: 4.25"
