About the Item

This exceptional eight-piece Dutch Delft garniture was hand painted circa 1820 in cobalt blue and bears the mark of De Klaauw, known as “The Claw.” The garniture consists of five covered vases and three open beaker vases. Each piece has a strongly modeled, faceted form rising from a hexagonal foot. The covered vases have domed lids surmounted by traditional bird-and-ball finials. The three beaker vases have lean, flaring forms that introduce contrast and balance within the complete arrangement. Each piece is extensively hand painted with the celebrated Peacock’s Feathers pattern, a well-known Dutch Delft design widely used during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The large stylized flowers and radiating leaves resemble the spreading feathers of a peacock’s tail. Deep cobalt blue is balanced by lighter blue shading and areas of fresh white glaze, giving the decoration depth and movement. The unusual eight-piece composition allows the garniture to be displayed in several arrangements. Shown together, the graduated forms create an impressive and highly decorative grouping. De Klaauw, meaning “The Claw,” was one of the historic pottery factories of Delft. The factory began production in Delft, The Netherlands, in 1661 and remained active into the early 19th century, Condition: Excellent Marks: Factory marks for De Klaauw Dimensions: The covered jars measure 12.5" tall x 5.75" wide x 4" deep. The beaker vases measure 9" tall x 5.25" wide x 4" deep. Price: $7,800 Notable Details: An unusually extensive eight-piece garniture comprising five covered vases and three open beaker vases, all hand painted with matching cobalt-blue floral decoration and raised on hexagonal feet.

A beautiful set of five blue and white Delft vases, this faience collection was hand-painted in Holland, circa 1900. The three bulbous vases are lidded, each with a finial depicting a rampant lion with a ball in its forepaws. Beneath the lion is a mottled background (on the front side only), with a foliate and floral margent. Each vase has the same scene painted on the front of the main body: a couple walking through a field surrounded by flowers. The opposite side has a floral rinceaux above a foliate branch. Painted in a similar fashion, the two concave vases are without lids. The side opposite from the cartouche of the couple has floral margents. All five vases have canted corners on the base. Inspired by Italian majolica, the faience produced in 16th century Holland...
