About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Victorian English sterling silver and walnut wood coasters; part of our wine and drinks related silverware collection. These exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver wine coasters have a circular-shaped cylindrical form. Each coaster is embellished with impressive pierced scrolling leaf ornamentation, incorporating a cartouche to the anterior surface. The cartouches to these antique silver coasters are each ornamented with contemporary bright cut engraved crest of a ram's head. The shaped upper rim of each coaster is ornamented with an applied gadroon decorated border. These sterling silver coasters have impressive turned walnut bases and are fitted with green baize to the underside. These exceptional coasters are the finest of their type you could hope to acquire. Condition These antique sterling silver wine coasters with walnut bases are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. The bright cut decoration to each piece is very crisp and the applied and pierced ornamentation is very sharp. Full hallmarks struck to the rim of each coaster are very clear; the nature of the coaster dictates the location of the hallmarks to the rim of the base. In many extant coasters, because of this, the hallmarks may become very worn and illegible. In this instance however the hallmarks remain very clear. Reflections in photography may detract from the true representation of these pieces of Victorian silverware. Dimensions Diameter 13.7cm/5.4' Height 4.7cm/1.9' Date: 1839 Origin: London, England.
