About the Item

An exceptional pair of hanging silver memorial lamps (Nerot Neshama) from 19th-century Gibraltar — luminous relics of Jewish devotion and artistry from one of the Mediterranean’s historic Jewish communities. Each lamp is finely crafted in silver using a combination of casting, piercing, repoussé, and engraving, showcasing the delicate skill of the period’s silversmiths. The lamps, unmarked yet deeply expressive, are connected through their dedicatory inscriptions to the Pariente family, a name prominent in the Jewish history of Gibraltar. The first lamp, dated Shevat 5622 (1862), features a domed canopy richly adorned with vegetal motifs, suspended gracefully from three elegant silver chains. The engraved dedication on the central hoop immortalizes members of the Pariente family, reflecting the enduring tradition of memorial illumination in synagogue sanctuaries. Height: 60 cm. Diameter of hoop: 15.5 cm. Max. width: 19 cm. The second lamp, slightly later in the 19th century, is suspended from four silver chains attached to a pierced and patterned central hoop with a rhythmic repeating design. Its inscription, also commemorating members of the Pariente family, continues the legacy of remembrance and light. Height: 38 cm. Diameter of hoop: 17 cm. Max. width: 21 cm. Together, these two memorial lamps form a rare and moving ensemble — a testament to the spiritual heritage, aesthetic refinement, and familial devotion of Gibraltar’s 19th-century Jewish community. 30.33ozt Total Weight
