Hicks & Meigh Ironstone Armorial Sauce Tureens, 41st Regiment of Foot, Pair Description: This pair of English ironstone sauce tureens, each with its original cover and matching two-handled stand, was made for the officers' mess of the 41st Regiment of Foot, the most highly decorated British regiment of the War of 1812. Every piece carries the regimental device: the Roman numeral XLI within a blue garter beneath a crown in rose, cobalt and gilt, repeated on both sides of the tureen body, on the cover, and twice on the stand. The decoration is a Regency Japan pattern in a rich Imari palette of iron-red, underglaze cobalt blue and gold, with flowering branches, chrysanthemum and peony heads, and broad cobalt bands reserved with gilt diapering. The tureens are of compressed oval form on shaped spreading feet, with gadrooned lower bodies, gilt foliate scroll handles and molded rope-twist finials. The stands have scalloped molded rims and pierced handles modeled as gnarled branches. Regimental mess china of this date rarely survives. It was ordered in quantity, used hard, carried from garrison to garrison and broken; complete sauce tureens retaining both their covers and their original stands, as a matching pair, are a genuine rarity. Marks: printed in underglaze blue to the undersides with the Royal Arms above STONE CHINA. Condition: excellent throughout, with no chips, cracks or restoration. Light wear to the gilding consistent with age and use. Dimensions: Length: 9 1/4 inches (23.5 cm) Height: 7 inches (17.8 cm)
