"A Group Of California Indians" Wood Cut Engraving. C 1856. Very Rare. Americana
"A Group Of California Indians" Wood Cut Engraving. C 1856. Very Rare. Americana

"A Group Of California Indians" Wood Cut Engraving. C 1856. Very Rare. Americana

Located in Incline Village, NV

This is a very rare and important original image of early Western Americana, or more specifically, "Californiana". Mid 19th century and researched to have been engraved in 1856, it captures, in incredible detail, a group of twelve Native American Indians with a baby in a papoose, gathered together in front of their hanging tools, baskets, implements and weaponry behind them on a "tent like" backdrop. There are men, women, young, and elderly. It is a signed wood cut engraving applied in ink by well known wood cut engraver of the mid 19th century, William J. Peirce (active 1851-1879). It is in excellent all original condition with no additions, no restoration of any kind and it is housed in it's original 1 1/2" double beveled wooden birds eye maple veneered frame with a gilt 1/2" filet interior border. "A Group Of California Indians" is engraved at the base along with a non-descript notation "For description see page 381" which appears in the margin, in addition to an illegible signature. Both these line items are also noted by the New York Public Library, where a digital example exists from the esteemed collection of "The Miriam and Ira D. Wallach Division Picture Collection", which was assembled in 1986 and recently digitalized. The Library of Congress also memorializes this image and theirs is similarly a digital image. My example came out of the Grant Smith Collection of "Californiana", as is noted on the back of the framed engraving. He was located at Main Street in Bolinas, California (see images on the rear for provenance). Research reveals that he was a direct descendant of the coastal Miwok people who built a settlement in the Bolinas lagoon area. The engraving is referenced in both the New York Library and The Library of Congress as "A Group of California Indians". It is one of the earlier images you will find, along with McKenny and Hall lithographed mages of Native American Indians; and because of it's subject matter and extreme rarity, "A Group Of California Indians" commands attention and interest from the Western art collectors' arena. California became a state on September 9, 1850 making this one of the earliest known images (Circa 1856) of "Californiana" and California Native American...

North American Totemic Wood Sculpture with Polychrome Decoration
North American Totemic Wood Sculpture with Polychrome Decoration

North American Totemic Wood Sculpture with Polychrome Decoration

Located in Nottingham, GB

Totem poles are among the most recognisable artistic expressions of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, including communities across present-day Alaska and British Columbia. Traditionally carved from monumental cedar trunks, these sculptural forms served as visual records of lineage, status, mythology, and clan identity. The figures depicted—often animals, supernatural beings, and ancestral spirits—were arranged in carefully structured sequences, each contributing to narratives that communicated family histories, cultural values, and sacred traditions. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, smaller-scale carvings inspired by these monumental poles began to circulate beyond their original contexts, finding appreciation among travellers and collectors drawn to the distinctive visual language of Northwest Coast art. Today, they remain powerful reminders of the storytelling traditions and artistic ingenuity of the region. This carved and painted wooden totem pole presents a lively vertical composition inspired by the narrative traditions of Alaskan Indigenous carving. Rich in character and decorative appeal, the sculpture combines a succession of stylised figures, each distinguished by expressive carving and bold polychrome ornament. The uppermost section is dominated by the head of a bird, with a pronounced beak, wide circular eyes, and striking red and black painted details that immediately command attention. Beneath it appears a stylised fish rendered horizontally across the composition, its curved form creating a visual transition between the figures above and below. Further down, a smiling mask-like face emerges from the structure, its animated expression lending warmth and individuality to the carving. Supporting the composition is a fourth figure with outstretched wing- or fin-like elements, highlighted with accents of blue, black, and white that contribute to the rhythm and balance of the overall design. The figures are arranged in the traditional stacked manner associated with totemic imagery, with incised detailing used to define facial features, plumage, scales, and other distinguishing characteristics. The painted decoration remains vibrant, softened only slightly through time, and continues to enhance the sculptural quality of the work. Of particular interest are the handwritten inscriptions on the reverse, reading "North American Indian Totem Pole...

The adzed marks on the bear are identical to this totem. Also, the happy and sad faces are almost identical including their orientation left and right. This pole was carved by Simon in 1988. He used happy and sad faces in some of his work to notate good times and bad times. 9'2"H x 20" at base. Antique and Vintage Native American Objects

As part of thoughtful home decor, antique and vintage Native American objects — works created by Native American artists and artisans — can bring rich textures and colors into a space.

Art collecting can be done in a socially and environmentally conscious way that reinvests in local communities. Tribal art is traditionally crafted with earth-friendly materials that respect the environment.

Textiles have long been objects of art and utility for Native Americans. Traditional weaving techniques involve material made from plant and animal fibers. Different tribes have woven distinctive patterns and colors into blankets, rugs and garments, such as the vibrant geometric shapes woven from wool by the Navajo.

After metal and glass beads were introduced to North America by Europeans, they became a popular form of art. Intricate beading appears on clothing, jewelry and other objects. Beadwork not only looks stunning, but it is also deeply emblematic of Native American ethnicity and can be used to pass stories handed down from generation to generation. Beaded garments have often been commissioned for important events like weddings, dances and celebrations.

Native Americans initially created pottery out of necessity to carry water and store food. For centuries, artists have decorated jugs, vases and other vessels, from designs etched into clay to experimentation with firing methods for unique finishes.

Find a diverse collection of colorful and culturally enriching antique and vintage Native American decorative items, objects and much more on 1stDibs.
