Pair of French Louis XVI Style Cut-Crystal and Gilt-Metal Candelabra, Circa 1880

Pair of French Louis XVI Style Cut-Crystal and Gilt-Metal Candelabra, Circa 1880

Located in Atlanta, GA

A finely decorative pair of late 19th century French or Continental cut-crystal and gilt-metal candelabra, conceived in the Louis XVI Revival taste and reflecting the brilliant decorative vocabulary of the Belle Époque interior. Each candelabrum is composed with a shaped cut-crystal standard rising from a radiating scalloped circular base, the glass worked with alternating fluted, diamond-cut, and crosshatched panels that catch and refract light with strong prismatic effect. The central upright finial is similarly faceted, lending height and architectural presence to the form. The gilt-metal arms extend in scrolling foliate branches, terminating in three crystal candle cups or bobeches dressed with faceted crystal bead swags and elongated pendant drops. The combination of clear cut glass, dark metal pinning, and warm gilt-metal mounts follows the historic French taste for ormolu-mounted crystal lighting, recalling the refinement of late 18th century neoclassical candelabra while incorporating the more theatrical sparkle favored in the late 19th century. The floral and foliate arms, scalloped crystal bases, cut-glass finials, and profusion of suspended prisms make the pair especially suitable for use as mantel candelabra...
