About the Item

Vintage oversized Mid-Century Modern volcanic lava glazed table lamp by Carstens Tönnieshof, West Germany, late 1960s, transformed from an extra large vase into a one-of-a-kind table lamp by Amitābha Studio with brass detailing, a perfectly paired new custom drum lampshade in an Italian jacquard with Houlès Paris trim, newly wired for U.S. use with a matching fabric wrapped cord. Plug customized for your country of use. Height includes lampshade. The base is a showcase of what makes Carstens Tönnieshof's late-period work so collectible. Three distinct glaze treatments share a single surface: a smoky blue-gray matte zone across the upper vessel; a band of glossy, vivid orange across the widest point — molten and luminous; and below that, a heavily cratered lava glaze in dark charcoal-gray, erupting in textured domes against a smooth navy black body. Matte, gloss, and volcanic texture held in one vessel. The combination is characteristic of the most technically ambitious fat lava work produced at the factory in the late 1960s, when designers Dieter Peter and Rudolph Christmann pushed Carstens Tönnieshof's glazing practice to its most experimental peak — and the surfaces they developed are now among the most sought-after in mid-century modern collecting. The bespoke drum lampshade echoes and extends the palette of the base. Its teal-gray jacquard ground, woven in Italy for Linwood (UK), carries an all-over abstract pattern in orange — interconnected organic forms that read like coral or lichen at close range — trimmed with Houlès Paris ribbon at top and bottom. About Carstens Tönnieshof The Carstens ceramic enterprise was founded in Brandenburg in 1892. Following the wartime loss of the original factories, the family re-established in West Germany as Carstens Tönnieshof — by 1950, one of the four foremost ceramic producers in the country, active through the 1970s. The studio produced the full arc of West German art pottery: from the restrained forms of the early postwar years to the expressive fat lava glazes of the late 1960s, when Dieter Peter and Rudolph Christmann developed the layered volcanic surfaces now most valued by collectors.
