About the Item

Pair of Tuscany Baroque Giltwood Mirrors, Mid 18th Century Dimensions: cm W 148 x H 192 x D 11 cm; sight size cm W 116.5 x H 158,5 x D 5 cm This pair of large mirrors, in carved and gilded wood, was made in Tuscany around the mid 18th century. Each frame has a broad, flat profile with an internally moulded, worked and gilded rebate. The front surface is entirely articulated by a continuous sequence of elongated, slightly convex ovolos set within rectangular recesses. This close rhythm of oval elements creates a very pronounced plastic effect, enhanced by the interplay of light and shadow on the gilding, which makes the frame particularly vivid and luminous. The inner band presents a second decorative frieze enriched with small hemispherical bosses and elongated beads, forming a subtle geometric border that accompanies and supports the central motif. The outer edge is instead adorned with a continuous geometric decoration, in slightly lower relief, which precisely defines the perimeter of the frame. The corners form the main ornamental focus of each frame: here the ovolo motif is interrupted to make room for large ribbons that twist and fold into a bow, set against a fan of acanthus leaves and small vegetal scrolls. A particularly interesting feature is the symmetrical and mirrored design of the carving at the corners: the arrangement of ribbons and bows is conceived to be perfectly balanced on all four sides, allowing the mirrors to be used either vertically or horizontally without disturbing the decorative order. This makes them extremely versatile and suitable for different interior settings. Originally conceived as frames for important paintings, they were transformed into mirrors in the 19th century. Owing to their size, the quality of the carving and the splendour of the gilding, this pair of mirrors is perfectly suited to become a focal point in either a contemporary or period interior, whether displayed individually or facing each other on opposite walls.

The frame, in carved and gilded wood, has the characteristics of the Venetian baroque. The internal wooden band, with 90-degree angles in the lower portion and with a cambered and curvilinear profile in the upper part, is carved in vegetable-shaped bas-reliefs. At the top a rich cymatium encloses another mirror. Rich perforated volutes, rocaille and phytomorphic elements, create movement to the whole and streamline the mirror making it graceful. To crown, there is a floral element. Also, below the frame includes a small mirror, while on the sides continue the friezes carved with flowers, leaves and scrolls rocaille.
