About the Item

A pair of high-back chairs in moulded and carved oak with rush seats, executed in France circa 1940–1950 in the manner of Charles Dudouyt. The architectural silhouette, with its tall ladder back, turned and ringed uprights, carved panel, and rush seat resting on sturdy ringed legs, places these chairs squarely within the neo-rural furniture tradition that Dudouyt made emblematic of mid-century French decorative arts. Dudouyt was among the most influential furniture designers of his generation, developing a recognisable style that married modernised rusticity with powerful volumes and expressive carved woodwork. His influence extended widely through the workshops and ateliers of the following decades, inspiring pieces that carry his formal language while reflecting the regional craft traditions he championed. These chairs, with their robust presence and careful execution, are a strong example of that legacy, objects that feel simultaneously rooted in French vernacular tradition and fully resolved as works of modern design.
