About the Item

An extremely rare Louis XV style late 19th century to very early 20th century Chaise Percee or commode cover cane and wood chair. This is a historical piece and below is the proper information on it. The Chaise Percee was used by the wealthy and royals to cover up a chamber pot. French for “pierced chair” and known in France as “chaise nécessaire,” Currently they are used rather whimsically by those in the know to cover the modern commode and they have found their way into the homes of society mavens and legendary designers alike. During the time of Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour, the chaise percée was kept in the “Cabinet des Dépêches,” a room that was normally very well decorated. These were not made for the general public in the 18th century, and therefore they are very rare. By the early 1900s chaise percées could still be found in many regions around Europe. “They had them in the Rooms so during the cold and snow days, they didn’t have to go to the ‘outhouse’ or ‘pit latrine,'” said H.Philippe. “Of course they were not made as fancy as the earlier versions. The chaise Percee will fit over most modern commodes. It literally slides over from the back or over the top as you can see in the photos of my own powder room. It's a truly special piece and still extremely useful if desired to use as such, or as a conversation piece of art in a corner. The chair has the original chipped paint. The cane is in great condition with no breaks.
