About the Item

Modular three-bay metal shelving unit designed by Wim Rietveld for the Dutch manufacturer Gispen in 1954. The gray powder-coated metal frame features X-brace back supports and multiple open shelves across all three bays. Four fall-front cabinet doors punctuate the unit in bold, contrasting colors — orange, blue, yellow, and black — each fitted with a small circular cutout pull. The overall composition reflects a rational, grid-based approach to storage that was central to Dutch industrial design thinking in the postwar period. Rietveld designed the #663-2 storage system during his prolific period at Gispen, where he developed a range of standardized, industrially produced furniture. The design earned the Diploma d'Onore at the 10th Triennale di Milano, one of the most prestigious design honors of the era. The use of interchangeable colored door panels anticipated modular systems that would become widespread in the decades that followed. Shows wear consistent with age and use. Overall condition is good and original throughout.
