About the Item

An elegant and architecturally refined Italian Mid-Century four-drawer sideboard / dresser attributed to Vittorio Dassi, produced in Italy during the 1950s. The piece embodies the sophisticated balance between sculptural form and functional modernism that defined the finest Italian furniture of the postwar period. The design is characterized by its striking curved drawer fronts, creating a rhythmic and fluid façade that gives the cabinet exceptional dimensionality and visual movement. The recessed integrated handles are seamlessly incorporated into the geometry of the drawers, emphasizing the clean horizontal lines and streamlined aesthetic associated with Dassi’s most recognizable designs. Crafted in beautifully figured flamed walnut veneer, the cabinet showcases warm tonal variation and dramatic grain movement that enhance its sculptural presence. The darker framing around the case subtly defines the silhouette and recalls the refined contrasts frequently found in Italian modernist furniture influenced by Gio Ponti and the Milanese design school. The top has been newly customized with a soft blue back-painted glass surface, introducing a refined contemporary accent while remaining fully harmonious with the cabinet’s original proportions and elegant architectural character. Raised on slender black lacquered tapered legs ending in brass sabots, the piece achieves a remarkable visual lightness despite its substantial proportions. The combination of aerodynamic curves, sophisticated materials, and meticulous detailing strongly reflects the design vocabulary developed by Vittorio Dassi during the 1950s. What makes this example particularly noteworthy is its exceptionally preserved condition. The cabinet retains a remarkable sharpness in its lines, veneers, proportions, and construction details, avoiding the overly restored appearance often found in mid-century pieces. The surfaces have only been professionally refinished and carefully revived using traditional shellac polishing techniques (gommalacca), preserving the integrity, depth, and authenticity of the original craftsmanship. Ideal both as a bedroom dresser or as a sculptural credenza for sophisticated interiors, the piece represents the timeless elegance and high level of Italian cabinetmaking from the mid-century era. Attribution By Vittorio Dassi Italy, circa 1955 Materials * Flamed walnut veneer * Back-painted glass top * Brass sabots * Black lacquered legs Condition Very good vintage condition with professionally refinished surfaces. The piece retains its original character and construction integrity, with only minor signs of age and use consistent with careful preservation.
