About the Item

This two-part vitrine cabinet by A.B. N. Bomans Ångsnickeri represents the height of late 19th- and early 20th-century Finnish craftsmanship. Founded in 1871 by Nikolai Boman in Åbo (present-day Turku, Finland), Boman became the country’s most prestigious furniture manufacturer, renowned for combining industrial precision with exceptional hand-finished detail. The company name, translating to “N. Boman’s Steam Joinery Ltd.,” reflected the advanced woodworking methods that distinguished the firm during the period. By the early 20th century, Boman was producing luxury interiors for embassies, banks, and ocean liners, eventually earning a Royal Warrant to the Swedish Court. This cabinet, likely dating from the 1890s through the early 1910s, is a remarkable example of Finnish Neo-Renaissance and Northern Baroque Revival design. Constructed in richly grained oak with a dark Flemish or ebonized finish, the piece showcases the architectural presence and deep ornamental carving associated with Boman’s finest early work. The original brass medallion label confirms production during the company’s “Ångsnickeri” period, prior to the firm shortening its name to Oy Boman Ab in 1937. The upper vitrine section is framed by dramatic carved grapevine pilasters extending from top to bottom, a motif traditionally associated with abundance and hospitality in European decorative arts. Beveled glass side panels allow light into the cabinet interior. The lower commode base is designed in a restrained breakfront form, centered by three drawers fitted with brass ring pulls. The cabinet’s proportions balance the visual weight of the carved upper section with the grounded architectural solidity of the base. Dentil molding at the transitional joint between the sections demonstrates the precision joinery for which Boman became internationally respected. The tight grain of the oak indicates the use of premium slow-growth timber, contributing to the cabinet’s impressive structural integrity more than a century later. Under the artistic direction of Carl-Johan Boman, the son of the founder, Boman evolved from producing traditional revival furniture into one of Scandinavia’s leading luxury makers. This cabinet belongs to the company’s earlier period, before its transition into Nordic Art Deco and Mid-Century Modernism, and reflects the grandeur and craftsmanship that defined prewar Scandinavian decorative arts. Equally suited as a library cabinet, bar cabinet, or display vitrine, this piece embodies a level of carving, construction, and material quality rarely encountered today. It stands as an important example of “Old World” Finnish furniture making at the height of Boman’s production years.
