About the Item

A striking vintage sculptural coffee table made from a substantial section of solid rootwood, dating from approximately the 1970s. The table is formed around the natural shape of the tree, with a broad irregular live-edge top, open cavities, exposed knots and dramatically branching root forms. The naturally shaped supports give the piece an almost architectural appearance, while the exceptionally heavy construction emphasizes its monumental character. Rather than concealing the original structure of the wood, the maker incorporated the knots, fissures, branch formations and uneven edges into the design. The tabletop has been carefully levelled and polished while retaining the organic outline and much of the original surface character. The exact wood species is unknown, although the density, weight and warm grain suggest a heavy tropical hardwood. It should therefore be described as solid rootwood rather than attributed specifically to teak without further documentation. This type of free-form furniture became especially popular during the 1960s and 1970s, when designers and craftspeople increasingly worked with naturally formed slabs, roots and tree sections. Its sculptural quality fits particularly well within Organic Modern, Brutalist, Wabi-Sabi, Rustic Modern and contemporary minimalist interiors. Because of its impressive size and highly individual silhouette, the table functions equally well as a practical coffee table and as a freestanding piece of functional sculpture. Unmarked.
