About the Item

This is an antique Japanese Sculptural Root Wood Coffee Table. It is believed to date from the mid-Showa period (1950s–1970s). Crafted from a massive Japanese cedar tree, the table fully embraces the extraordinary volume and organic forms created by nature. Its powerful presence, appearing as though it were carved directly from a single ancient tree, transcends the boundaries of furniture and takes on the character of a sculptural artwork. The greatest appeal of this piece lies in its ability to bring the vitality of nature—shaped over decades or even centuries—directly into a living space. The substantial tabletop and grounding base create a composition that reveals a different expression from every angle. The flowing contours of the roots, the undulating grain, natural cavities, and organic curves all showcase a beauty that could never be replicated by human hands alone. The surface is richly adorned with the distinctive grain patterns of Japanese cedar. These intricate lines create landscapes reminiscent of topographical maps or flowing water, inviting closer inspection.
