About the Item

Large and important, this monumental wall charger by Waylande Gregory depicts a cowboy on the range, with a lasso in hand, a ten gallon hat on his head, and spurs on his heels. The cowboy is framed by cactus plants to either side, and the entire scene is glazed in blue and ivory, with a sgraffito effect where Gregory scratched through the glaze to expose the raw clay beneath. The artist was one of America's greatest sculptors and ceramicists before and after World War II, producing a wide range of sculptures and wares in ceramic during his years working with Lorado Taft and later for WPA projects, institutions and public parks. A major retrospective of Gregory's work was recently organized by the University of Richmond's Museums. The piece is fitted for hanging on a wall, and is signed on the reverse.
